As a married person wears a wedding band to show their commitment to their spouse, a believer submits to baptism by immersion to demonstrate their commitment to following Jesus and to bear testimony of what has ALREADY taken place in the heart of the believer.
There is no magic or mystical action taking place. Baptism has no salvific qualities. It takes place AFTER conversion. It is an act of obedience in the life of the believer.
